Rep's Corner

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, our great state of Ohio will observe the life and accomplishments of one extraordinary individual, courageous leader, and great American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In my lifetime, I can remember back to a time when segregation was the norm and racism was rampant not only throughout the south, but to varying degrees in every corner of our country. Much has changed for the better. Today, there is greater equality in the areas of race, gender and creed. And we can credit much of our progress to the life work of Dr. King.

An unimposing figure, he stood a mere 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 173 lbs. He was well read in classical and modern philosophy and politics and used his ministry and non-violent tactics to open the eyes of a nation to an injustice to humanity. His vision and eloquence were unmatched by any and are truly a testament to the gifts that God had given him.

The man we honor on Monday was a shining example of the American spirit. His struggle for freedoms and rights from oppression mirror the many other struggles we as a nation have fought to overcome. In the face of peril to himself and to those he loved, he stood up for what he believed in and what he knew was right.

To me, Dr. King also serves as a great example of what can be accomplished in a representative democracy. His voice rang clear to millions of Americans who listened and then demanded change.

For many people, Monday is just another day that government employees don’t have to show up for work. For others, the day is but a mere footnote on their calendars. But for me, it will always be a day to honor an American who fought for freedom and democracy and won.
