Olman Honored For Mental Health And Disablities Advocacy

(Columbus) State Representative Lynn Olman (R-Maumee) was presented the 2003 Legislator the Year Award by the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council and the Ohio Statewide Independent Living Council at their annual legislative reception on Thursday.

Citing Rep. Olman for his leadership and commitment to advancing disability issues in Ohio, especially for people who suffer from mental illness, the ODDC and OSILC thanked him for his personal sacrifice to serve the public good. The Councils also commended Rep. Olman for re-introducing legislation to prohibit discrimination in health care policies against the treatment of mental illness and substance abuse and addiction, House Bill 33.

Representative Olman told a crowded Statehouse Atrium he was humbled by their display of support and generosity for his efforts to achieve equal treatment for people with mental illness. He also promised to continue working towards passing a mental health parity bill.

“I pledge to you I will not relent until we have eliminated discrimination in health care policies for people with mental illness,” Rep. Olman said. “This is the single most important goal for me in my last term as state representative.”

Representative Olman also stated he will continue to work with his colleagues to end discrimination for all people with disabilities.
